Signs of the Zodiac

Word of the Day is designed to help children learn how to use a dictionary, whilst simultaneously expanding their vocabulary. Today’s Word of the Day begins with the letter ‘Z’. The word is: Zodiac.zodiac n. Belt of the heavens limited by lines about 8° from the ecliptic on each side, including all apparent positions of the sun and planets as known to the ancient astronomers, and divided into 12 equal parts (signs of the ~: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces) each formerly containing the similarly named constellation but now by precession of equinoxes coinciding with the constellation that bears the name of the preceding sign (e.g. the constellation Aries is now in Taurus). [Gk zodiakos (kuklos) (circle) of figures, f. zodion dim. of zoon animal]
