Wie heißt du? – German phrase of the day

Wie heißt du? Ich heiße … – What’s your name? My name is …

Once pupils are happy with saying “Guten Morgen Frau…” or “Guten Tag Herr…”, it’s easy to teach them how to say their names and ask their classmates their names.

I’ve found that puppets are great for practising this. There’s a limit to how many times you can get the class to ask each other what their name is, but my pupils never seem to get tired of getting the puppets to talk to each other – even KS3 kids love it when I bring out the puppets!

Note: the letter “ß” has an “ss” sound.

We are posting a ‘German phrase of the day’ every day this week to celebrate the publication of Singt mit uns!, our new German songbook. To find out more about Singt mit uns!, follow this link:
