Word of the day #41: opaque

Word of the Day is designed to help children learn how to use a dictionary, whilst simultaneously expanding their vocabulary. Today’s Word of the Day begins with the letter ‘O’. The word is: opaque.

adj 1 not able to be seen through; not transparent. 2 difficult or impossible to understand.

n 1 an opaque thing. 2 in photography a substance for producing opaque areas on negatives.

Different types of paint will have different levels of opacity. Watercolour paint is not opaque: its chief characteristics are its transparency and pureness of colour. However, gouache is an opaque watercolour paint, created by adding white chalk to the pigment.
