Spelling unruly words: free English teaching resource

Sometimes the spelling of certain words doesn’t follow the rules.

Use this worksheet and wordsearch to reinforce the ‘ie’ and ‘ei’ words that are unruly – rules cannot be applied you just have to learn how to spell them.

This Unruly words activity is drawn from How to be Brilliant at Spelling. The book contains 40 photocopiable worksheets designed to stimulate Key Stage 2 (KS2) pupils’ interest in language and how it works. Children are often intrigued by the origins of words and the reasons why they are spelt the way they are. This book helps them to become confident and positive spellers.
